/ Hecate_NON VISIBLE CITY
The project theorizes the city as a multiplicity, a structure of spaces of possibilities while at the same time trying to establish a liaison between the city’s properties, tendencies and capacities. While properties are actual and can be observed, tendencies and capacities lie in the virtual level, becoming actual once exercised. In this framework, Hecate is the city’s apparatus; an urban “mining” system able to decipher, map, connect, or navigate itself through the superimposed layers in-forming the city’s layout.

00.GENERAL SCHEMA
This project aims at reconceptualizing space and the built environment as a dynamical landscape of potentialities where its possible futures emerge from within fields of relatedness and connectedness. Conceptually experiencing this dynamical landscape pushes the limits of our minds’ cognitive capacities to further understand and visualise space’s complexity as it unfolds at different spaces, speeds, and rhythms. This topological field of emergence is an apparatus that recursively calculates differentials and uncertainties named Hecate (/ˈhɛkətiː/; Ancient Greek: Ἑκάτη, Hekátē) after the Greek goddess of extensive and intensive thresholds.

01.INTENSIVE MAPPINGS
Each cartography becomes intensified as it transforms into a map of qualitative tensions to represent the textured gradient of its becoming. Mapping techniques using lattices or matrixes are used to relationally measure each intensive variable as it fluxes between its maxima and minima. The resulting patterned gradients monitor the intensity of a spatial property, its patterns of behavior, and critical points of change. Maps have become intensive, their transformational patterns inscribed into relational fields of varying variables.

Intensive maps and their textured gradients are translated into geo-referenced information fields allowing for their topological architecture to emerge. Networks of interconnected nodes point to each entity’s form and function, where form refers to the patterns of the relation between its points and function becomes the speed by which information flows from point to point. Each networked map is itself variable in the sense that it is continuously receiving information regarding the environment, adapting its structure to accommodate for its resilience and resist entropy.

And while the complexity of information remains high, the mappings are being further compressed to enhance their representational efficacy. Through this mapping process, the city’s varying intensities and densities fields are rendered visible in the form of varying gradients. Their distribution and power points to areas within the urban context that are variably saturated. The research points to spaces where fields of information densify and amplify one another as the city’s most affective regimes, its islands of affordances.

Hecate’s dynamical landscape actively connects local communities—the socioeconomic environment, its actors and processes—with the physical environment— its developmental patterns, and life cycles. Modeling them into an ecosystemic continuum will generate more ecological, dynamic, and adaptive urban assemblages. More than a mere aesthetic experience, the city is here understood as the matrix of the topological relationships and processes that formulate it, its different actors coming into play, their territories constantly in the making.
