/ Shading Machines

Shading Machines is a case study on modular and modulating typologies for shading structures set at the Old Port Area Chania, Crete.  It aims at an open and dynamic shading system that is continuous, heterogenous, and multiple, able to account for the richness and diversity of the built environment of Chania’s Venetian Harbour. The structural and formal typologies proposed to reflect the spatial layout through superimposing and adjustable elements that can adapt to changing needs in real-time.

01.DEEP STRUCTURE | THE UNIT

Three fixed and three telescopically-moving elements, as well as their combinatorial possibilities, compose the full set of the kit of elements. Prefabricated metal-frame structures come in three length sizes 3.60m, 5.40m, and 7.20m, and match their overhead shading panels. Variously combined, the fixed and moving elements provide for different shading scenarios that can shade areas from 2.40 to 12.8m, in length.
