/ You and AI: Through the              Algorithmic Lens

You and AI: Through the Algorithmic Lens is a digital 4-week outdoor festival commissioned by Onassis Foundation and curated by Future Everything. It challenges perceptions and fantasy visions of autonomy and intelligence about AI, exploring how these systems are created, their impact, and possible ways in which we can reimagine and reshape them so they are more transparent, fair, equitable and caring. Unfolding through three thematic journeys in the park, the exhibition investigates ideas around AI, civic space, and participation, from how we perceive the world and are being seen through algorithms, to questioning the meaning of intelligence within AI.

Participating Artists:

01.VIRTUAL MAP

The exhibition was designed to be fully integrated into the park, so that casual passersby could become exhibition visitors simply by coming across the exhibits. Artworks would then turn into meeting points and event spaces, adding to the park’s vibrancy and collective ambiance. In terms of the design process, the park’s layout, its various subspaces, and multiple entrances became attractors for potential works of art and their multidimensional character. The most public works of art could then be found near the entrances, reflecting the scale of the city, while those with a more intimate character found their way into the park’s many clearings.

02.CONNECTIONIST MODEL

To enhance the artworks’ spatial interactions and curatorial continuities, syntactic methods were applied to analyze the park’s spatial layout and activity patterns. Through this process, journeys in the park were designed in terms of visual and experiential continuity amongst the exhibits. The vast medium differentiation amongst them – from led screens, sculptures and pavilions to projections and large scale installations – significantly diversified the journeys enhancing the overall visitor experience. Using mirror surfaces as part of the artworks’ visual and communication language, they were further blended into the surroundings, allowing visitors to become a part of them.

03.ARTWORK DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

Exhibition design and artwork selection were open processes involving feedback loops and shifting interrelationships. Collaborating closely with the artists, most artworks were redesigned to fit their new outdoor locations, their scale and rhythm designed to reflect the intricate scale and rhythm of the park and the city. This dynamic setup of artworks, spaces, and processes allowed for the exhibits’ multiplicity to emerge and be accounted for throughout the design process.
